It's spring and the bears are on the move! We liv It's spring and the bears are on the move!
We live in such a wild and beautiful place, and with that we have wildlife. We love to see bears and are so fortune that they let us share THEIR back yard.
In order to protect them and keep ourselves safe, we need to always keep a safe distance and make a lot of noise while we enjoy our mountain bike trails.

It is never ok to actively seek out bears, whether it be for pictures, or just to have a personal sighting. They are wild animals and deserve our respect. We know that UROC riders are aware of this, but we want you to spread the word to all user groups.

If you do encounter a bear(s), please do not take pictures, please do not post to social media, please do not tell people the location of the bear(s). We appreciate private messages so we can give our riders a heads up. But we should always be aware of all wildlife while we recreate.

Bear Smart has kindly sent us this checklist for being bear aware. Please give them a read.

Honestly some users of the PPK trails have been engaging in bad bear behaviour. If it continues there is potential of trail closures. We just want all the people and the animals to be safe.

UROC trail report May 13th: It’s Friday the 13t UROC trail report May 13th:

It’s Friday the 13th, but there is nothing to be scared of! If anything we should all be happy that the majority of the trails in Crowsnest are good to go.

We have appreciated everyone’s patience waiting for your favorite sections of singletrack to be ready to ride.

In the York Creek area, the trails are running great. There will be a lot of snow on anything above School of Rock (York with a Fork, Big Bear, Rum Head) and those trails should be avoided for now. Upper School of Rock still has some wet patches in the upper trees, but is otherwise clear of snow. The last part of Upper School of Rock had significant blowdown over the winter and although the trees are clear, the trail surface has changed and will need some repair. Just be mindful of this if you are riding the trail. It is passable, but there are overturned stumps and some holes that will need to be filled soon. Sooper Trooper and Whistling Post are riding really well at the moment. Just a quick note to riders using Whistling Post: Be cautious when exiting the trail back onto the coal road. There is an increase in traffic on that road due to more RV campers as well as some industrial machinery moving earth and rock for more campsites. This trail is on private land and we are fortunate to be able to use it. The last thing we need is an accident between a rider and a resident, or worker. Enjoy the trail, just take a good look before flying out onto the road. We are not the only users in that area.

The trails @passpowderkeg are also in great shape. There is still some wet spots when crossing ski runs and you will find some wet areas on the trail particularly on Buck50. Please just ride through the wet areas along the trail surface, and do not braid the trail. The trail surfaces have been designed to shed water and we appreciate riders not making detours that will eventually lead to larger problems.

Bellevue trails are also clear! Good Riddance and Downtime are a great challenge if you are looking for something different.

Have a great time on our trails.
Please tag us in your photos and stories!

This weekend we had such a fun and successful UROC This weekend we had such a fun and successful UROC Short Film Festival and Mountain Bike Social! A huge thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers who made this event the great evening that it was.

We were especially grateful to all the short film makers who generously allowed us to show their work. We know not everyone could make it this weekend, so we want to feature each short film over the next few days so we can all watch and re-watch these inspiring, creative, and amusing films.

First up is, My Last Day of Summer. Link in bio.

It is the last day of summer and Julia is at the local bike shop hoping that her bike can be fixed. While waiting she browses the shop until she stumbles upon a comic book. The comic explores a world which stylizes the sights and sounds she would experience on the trails. Blended with her imagination she finds herself on a ride like no other.

Kristina Wayte has been drawing her whole life and polished those skills while earning a BFA in Animation/Illustration at San Jose State University. She began her artistic career working as a 2D artist at a mobile gaming studio. She has always been passionate about the outdoors and becoming immersed in the scenery around her. Eventually this led to her specializing in creating mountain bike and outdoor influenced illustrations. She developed a comic called “The Trail Series,” which documents her journey on the trail. Her skills of creating game trailers at the mobile gaming studio, led her into the idea of animating the comic. Her idea evolved into the creation of her first film, My Last Day of Summer, which has since then been featured in film festivals around the world and received the Creative Excellence Award at the BANFF Film Festival. Follow along on her creative journey @sketchytrails
We had a great few days of trail work this past we We had a great few days of trail work this past week to start off the bike season! A group of students from Livingstone School started on some work raking Berma-Grin and tuning up the berms and jumps last Friday. We hope to keep working on it over the next few weeks to get the whole trail tuned up!

Today we had an awesome crew of people come out to Pass Powderkeg to help toss logs and branches to clear the corridor for the new trail being built later this spring.

Thanks to everyone who helped out, and stay tuned for more volunteer opportunities coming up soon!

UROC Trail Report May 6th: There has been a lot o UROC Trail Report May 6th:

There has been a lot of change around here in a week, and there is a lot to report about!

A pretty warm week in Crowsnest has led to quite a bit of melting and trail clearing especially at lower elevations.

In the York Creek Network, Whistling Post is clear and riding well, Toadstool is clear, and lower School of Rock is completely rideable. Upper School of Rock still needs a bit more time. Quite a bit of snow especially in the upper trees. Front door climb in unrideable with all the lingering snow. Sooper Trooper is clear top to bottom.

The trails @passpowderkeg are drying quickly. Most of the trails on the east side are clear of snow, until you get to the Dale Standquist trail crossing where Chainsaw Massacre starts. There is still significant snow load above that, especially when crossing ski runs that have not melted out yet. Buck50 and Spare Change are not ready yet.

Bellevue trails are opening slowly, but there is still patches of snow to be found.

There are 2 events to talk about this weekend.

First we have our UROC movie night happening Saturday at the Polish Hall in Coleman. Doors open at 6:30 and movies start at 7:30. Refreshments and snacks available for purchase. Plus the opportunity to buy some UROC merchandise. All proceeds going back into the trails. Lots of draw prizes to give away!

Second we have a planned Trail Work Day for Sunday. Meet at the Pass Powderkeg Lodge at noon to help remove logs and branches from the newly cleared trail corridors. This will get the site ready for the trail builders to start the new trails. Bring gloves, glasses, good footwear and some food and water, plus a good attitude! There will be more opportunities for trail work days in the near future.

We are ready to kick off the season!

New PPK Trail update! Over the last few weeks, ha New PPK Trail update!

Over the last few weeks, hard working volunteers have been corridor clearing to get ready for the trail builders that will be constructing the new trail at PPK this spring.
Trail building is expensive and we are rolling up our sleeves and doing the work that can be done ahead of time.
There are still lots of logs left to clear, so stay tuned for a trail work day where everyone can help out!

Also a great way to contribute is to go and buy your UROC membership!
Or attend our upcoming Movie Night (May 7), where all proceeds go to trail building. #ridecrowsnest #volunteer

UROC Trail Report April 29th: All of us at UROC a UROC Trail Report April 29th:

All of us at UROC are looking forward to welcoming all of our riders back to the trails in Crowsnest Pass…but…our trails aren’t quite ready to ride yet.

This is a pretty common scene on the trails at the moment. There are lots of sections of dry trails, but we have pretty persistent sections of ice and snow lurking in the shaded spots along the trails.

Currently there are no trails that are totally free of snow and ice. The melt seems to be happening quicker every day, and we are hopeful that soon we will be able to ride.

UROC has a lot of exciting things happening this season including new trail construction and welcoming back bike racing into our community.
Our first event of the season will be the upcoming Movie Night on May 7th. At the Polish Hall in Coleman. See previous post for details.

Also, now is a great time to buy your membship! These trails unfortunately do not build and maintain themselves, so the money you spend on your membership goes right back into our trail network! You can purchase your membership at UROC.ca.

When the trails are ready, we will give updates for the start of group rides etc. Be patient, it will be worth the wait!
